Control Station

Microtunnel boring machines are controlled from the surface, with location and operation of the machine being continuously monitored.

Laser guidance system

Monitoring is usually done by means of a laser guidance system. During the drive, the MTBM is steered from the control station. Using the guiding system and steering jacks, the operator can remotely ensure a precise drive on line and level.

Generally there is a reference laser mounted within the launch shaft. This laser transmits to a laser receiver placed within the MTBM creating data about its position and trajectory. This information, along with other operational data is delivered to the control station.
